Health and Care’s Top 70 Stars

Eleanor Coulter

I am a qualified nurse with over 34 years experience. I have worked with many incredible people but none more exceptional than Eleanor Coulter. Eleanor is a health care assistant who has over 41 years experience working within the NHS. I am nominating Eleanor as a stand out star as I believe she epitomises the ethos of what this recognition is all about. Eleanor always goes the extra mile for others and if the NHS had national treasures then this is how she would be described. Compassionate and caring she always goes over and above. I first worked with Eleanor as a junior nurse in 1986 and I remember really looking forward to being on duty with her. She taught me that the little things are often the most important, insignificant things some might think, but what she was really teaching me was about was having a pride in my work and in my environment. She taught me about  compassion and caring and what a good bed side manner looked like. I always felt confident when I alongside her as I could sense her real desire and commitment to help people. I never forgot these lessons and experience which I carried with me to my senior management career. Roll on thirty years and I found myself sitting on the other side of the bed beside an elderly relative who was desperately ill. She started to tell me about a special nurse who was caring for her and no name was necessary as I knew immediately who comforted her through the night, who had held her hand when she was frightened, who had listened to her fears, who made her feel safe and who made her feel like she might run again when she could scarcely walk.   I watched her face light up when Eleanor entered the room and I wonder over the course of 41 years how many other lives Eleanor had impacted in her unassuming caring way. I believe that people like Eleanor make up the back bone of the NHS and I can think of no other person over the course of my career who deserves this recognition more. What Eleanor taught me is that we can all make a difference to the lives of those in need but it can often be the simplest gestures that can make the most significant difference. Eleanor I believe is a shining example to all.

I worked with Eleanor as a newly qualified staff nurse in 1986. Even than, Eleanor had been working in the hospital for several years. she was the person who took me under her wing, and demonstrated total and holistic care for my patients and how to listen to them. Like Coleen, wind on 30 + years, and Eleanor has cared for 2 of my relatives, one for rehabilitation and one for palliative care. in both situations, Eleanor was joyful, compassionate, caring, displaying all the qualities of a health care professional and I am truly thankful to her for her continued commitment to her role.

As a junior doctor who works in the NHS and someone who has also recently a patient whilst I have meet many kind and compassionate practitioners there are not many Eleanor Coulters. Eleanor is a truly one of a kind lady who’s compassion and genuine will to put others interests above her own certainly is deserving of this recognition.

Congratulations on your nomination Eleanor. I had the privilege of working with Eleanor in a little corner of the world called the Robinson Memorial Hospital. As I nurse I know my job would not have been possible without the help of our nursing auxiliaries. Eleanor is a shining example of one who carried out her work compassionately and professionally . Her great gift is her generosity of spirit to all she meets , staff patients and their families alike . She excels in what some would call the little things - persuading a confused patient back to bed in the middle of the night or bringing food to the relatives of a mother in her last days of life . Her ability to treat each individual, from prince to pauper with the same loving kindness and respect is truly impressive . I can think of no better person to receive this reward .

Eleanor is a wonderful caring individual who touches everyone she nurses. She nursed my late Mum in the Robinson hospital and my Mum adored her. Eleanor really does deserve to be recognised for her outstanding contribution to Health Care over the last 41 years.

Eleanor is and will always be, for those whose lives she’s touched, unforgettable! Her generous spirit reaches far beyond the wards into the lives of relatives and colleagues. Her poise and calm manner relaxes the most anxious patient and her humour can lift the hearts of the weary. She shows compassion to ALL she cares for. Our community has been richly blessed with such a brilliant role model. We are even more blessed to call her a colleague and special friend.

Eleanor has been a support to my family for over 20 years. She first nursed my Uncle when he had cancer and in doing so came to know my aunt's who she kept in contact with. Over the years as they became frailer she looked out for them and helped them with the necessities of life in her own time. Even now my last aunt is 96 and in a home Eleanor visits her nearly everyday. It is hard to express how much she means to my aunt and how grateful my family are to have met Eleanor and that she is part of our lives. You could not meet a more caring or compassionate person.

I have known Eleanor for many years. My late sister was her manager and I recall many times she mentioned Eleanor for her example of a hard working kind reliable compassionate carer that she was so proud of to have in her team
Eleanor has worked her whole life in Community Hospital care giving. Making the hospital experience a home from home experience for the patients under her care
She loves her job. She loves her patients. This is what the NHS wanted 70 years ago. An employee who has the patient at the centre of all the care required
Eleanor is a standout star for her local Trust and I would be honoured if she ever had to look after Me

Eleanor has been first a professional carer and then a personal friend to three of my senior family members in Northern Ireland over a period of many years, frequently visiting them in her own time and providing practical assistance with day-to-day needs and communications. Both at work and in her personal time she is wonderfully cheerful, always finding a way to have fun and enjoy a laugh with those she is with, no matter how difficult the circumstances. She is able to handle difficult conversations with both compassion and appropriate directness, a remarkable skill indeed.
As I live on the other side of the world, Eleanor's on-the-ground support to my relatives has been invaluable. Now Eleanor and her husband, children, grandchildren and brother have all effectively become members of our extended family.

I live in New Zealand and get back infrequently to see my aged relatives. Eleanor has cared for and supported three of my close senior family members. This is Eleanor's chosen profession but she takes it to a totally new level of care and consideration that goes so far beyond what you might expect - and in fact it isn't a profession in Eleanor's case it is a level of caring that very few will ever aspire to or reach and one which I'm sure many couldn't comprehend. There are so many caring individuals within the health system that deserve recognition but I doubt that many can compare to Eleanor. It is way beyond what you could envisage. There are so many things I could say but lets limit it to the example of my 96 year old aunt who is the last surviving member of the senior generation of my family - Eleanor visit my aunt almost everyday, takes her out on day trips, buys her ice creams, takes her to join in their family Christmas Day Celebrations. I can't be there but Eleanor is, not just what you might expect of a care giver, but something from someone who really, truly, deeply cares and keeps giving every hour of every day - Thank you Eleanor, you deserve to be number one on the Standout Stars - if you don't you'll always be number one in my book!

I have worked with Eleanor for a considerable number of years and known her for approx 40 of them. In that time I have witnessed a person who always went that extra mile when working with the patients. A caring considerate person who treats every individual patient as one of her own, like a family member. The care she gives is what I always imagined would be the care I would love to get if I was ever in the unfortunate situation. No words can truly descibe what a wonderful, caring lady she is and fully deserves this nomination.

I too worked with Eleanor for many years. Our ethos was to provide a care that put the patient right at the centre of everything. Despite delivering the bulk of the End of Life Care locally, the atmosphere was happy. One of my abiding memories is of Eleanor (and her friend Evelyn) singing in the wards. Eleanor symbolises what care should always be about; kindness, compassion and good humour. The best thing I can say about her (and her colleagues) is that if someone I love needed care, then I can think of no-one better to deliver it.

Eleanor is the nurse everyone wants to work with and the one you want to take care of your relatives . She does the work of several nurses while on duty and at the same time takes care with details like washing setting and even cutting hair if needed. She then goes home and calls with elderly neighbours when needed in her community , all with a smile on her face and a sense of humour which will keep you smiling when you recall her
stories in the future . I am writing this while on holiday in the Dordogne and have been unable to find reliable wi-fi until now but I wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity to vote for this incredible woman !

Eleanor is the most caring compassionate nurse and proud to be related to this woman. Eleanor recently cared for a family member of mine in the Robinson Hospital and he came out a stronger brighter man than when he went in. Eleanor deserves this award hands down she goes above and beyond for so many people and deserves recognition for her contributions to the Health Care for quite a number of years.

Eleanor has cared for four of my family members who were terminal. Eleanor went above and beyond the call of duty and had a special gift of compassion for these people and families during their last days. Over the years I have chatted to many people in the same situation and time after time Eleanor’s name would be mentioned as being such an amazing help at that difficult time. She is held in such high esteem throughout our community and has contributed so much to palliative care over the years. She deserves to win this award.
