Health and Care’s Top 70 Stars

Barbara Rowlands

Barbara Rowlands is the Ward F hotel services hostess for the afternoon shifts.

Barbara upholds the values and behaviours of ABMU.   Barbara’s natural personality is approachable, caring, and helpful, she is always prepared to go the extra mile for the patients on Ward F. Her natural happiness impacts greatly on what can sometimes be a very challenging environment.  Barbara makes such a difference to our patient’s meal times.  In the 5 years I have been ward manager on Ward F I have been overwhelmed by the kindness, compassion and dignity she has shown to our patients, visitors, families and staff.

Barbara has featured heavily in our champions of the month on Ward F – this is when patients get to comment on who has made a great difference to them during their recovery process.

  • “Barbara – because she always feeds us well” (taken from our champions of the month feedback”
  • Barbara has been mentioned on numerous occasions in our friends and family feedback – where she has been complimented on her care towards patients.
  • On Nurses day patients and families  were able to nominate “a nurse hero” Barbara was nominated by a family for being caring and supportive to their relative  during their admission
  • 2 weeks ago we had a number of patients who had been on the ward for a long period of time and voiced that they really felt like having pizza for tea.  Barbara without fail made sure that there was pizza for tea – which she brought in herself for the patients and cooked by the nursing staff.  The patients were so appreciative of her gesture they bought her a bunch of flowers as it had made such a difference to them.
  • Barbara will bring in rolls for patients so that on the nights when there is burgers or sausages on the menu – we can have a themed evening of burger night or hotdog night – Monday and Friday evenings have become a very exciting evening for our patients – which they really look forward too.

Barbara is an absolute ray of sunshine who lights up the ward as soon as she comes on shift.  The care and support she offers our patients is above and beyond – she is not only a lady who has an extremely big heart, she believes and demonstrates the values of caring for each other, working together and always improving.  She is the definition of “going the extra mile” and her happiness, humour, natural warmth and love brings such a joy to our ward.  She is an inspiration and role model for ABMU and for that we are extremely honoured to have her as part of our team.
