Health and Care’s Top 70 Stars

Helen Gray

Helen is the coordination manager of a new pilot clinic – the Rapid Diagnosis Centre – based in Neath Port Talbot hospital, funded by the Cancer Innovation Fund for two years which aims to support the earlier diagnosis of Cancer in patients who are experiencing vague non specific symptoms.

The clinic runs two mornings a week and is made of a rotational Physician and Radiologist plus a HCSW.  As the only full time constant member of the team Helen has been pivotal in getting the clinic up and running and the smooth operating on a weekly basis.  Although she is a Band 5 admin person Helen has been involved in all aspects of the clinic from telephoning patients to making sure they understand what to expect and are prepared for a full morning at the clinic to sorting out transport, organising all the IT / patient administration aspects, making sure all the clinicians are in the right place at the right time and collecting and reporting all the stats so that the effectiveness of the clinic can be measured and learning is captured.

To me Helen has embodied the ABMU values completely.

Working Together
Helen’s role has required her to work with many areas within the health board and the wider health and social care community.   She has skilfully encouraged a team approach amongst a disparate group of people, most of whom are much more senior than her.  I don’t think there are many people who could deal with the many aspects of Helen’s role from being an IT whizz, efficient at admin plus great with patients and clinicians.

In addition to this Helen has been an important part of the Neath Port Talbot delivery unit team, helping me, as Information Governance lead, to improve the Information Governance mandatory training compliance within the unit, despite being very busy in her day job.

Always Improving
Helen is someone who is always looking to develop herself and the services she is involved with.  She is undertaking an ILM course despite starting this new role and being very busy in her personal life planning her wedding.   She sees an issue and will take it upon herself to try to resolve it.  She is the sort of person who thinks “if not me then who”.  She thinks outside the box and goes to the root of the problem. For example when patients were turning up to clinic late due to transport problems she sorted out community transport.

Caring for Each Other
Helen is calm and polite and always helpful and friendly to colleagues and patients.  Nothing is too much trouble.  She is a great person to have on the team!
